Without forgetting about the author of El Quijote, we can start the visit by going to his birth house, which is now a small museum that recreates the atmosphere of a well-to-do Castilian household of the 16th and 17th centuries. The building is located in the old town of Alcalá, also known as ciudad complutense and it is believed that this is where Cervantes was born after conclusions drawn by the academic Luis Astrana, author of The Exemplary and Heroic Life of Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, published in 1948. It is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10.00am until 6.00pm, and entry is free.

We also must not miss the Roman city of Complutum, a monumental complex for archaeology lovers, the first Roman settlement of modern-day Alcalá. You can also enjoy a nice stroll around the city streets, with great university tradition, which has been the home of many important Spanish writers throughout the centuries. There are signposted routes that allow you to follow the footsteps of San Juan de la Cruz, Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos, Miguel de Unamuno or Camilo José Cela, who has a plaque at the train station.

Getting to Alcalá de Henares from our hostel is very easy, since we are located less than a mile away from Atocha station, from where you can easily get to anywhere in the region of Madrid.
