A refreshing and natural excursion: Las Berceas

If you fancy leaving Madrid’s summer heat behind for a day, you just have to take a bus from Moncloa or a regional Cercanías train from Atocha (located a few hundred yards from our hostel in the centre of Madrid), and in approximately one hour you will already be in the heart of the Guadarrama mountains, more specifically in the town of Cercedilla, where you can find the recreational area of Las Berceas.las berceas

This is an area for leisure and recreation with pools filled with fresh (almost cold) and clean water, since the temperatures in the mountains are much cooler than in the city of Madrid. These are the highest artificial pools in the region of Madrid, designed for adults and children, and they include a lifeguard and all the necessary services for a great ‘beach day’ in the mountains. They have magnificent views of the Guadarrama mountains and the Valley of Fuenfría, which will give you a great sense of space and fresh air. You can take your own food to the picnic area or, if you prefer, you can eat at good prices at the nearby bar.

There are baths in both of the adult pools, linked by a waterfall, and also outdoor nature activities such as zip-line, tree attractions, log jumps, etc. All of this is located inside a theme park called Amazonia, which offers activities for both adults and children.

Tickets cost approximately 6 euros and it’s open from Monday to Sunday from 10.30 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. Find out more information by calling +34 918 525 740 or via email at oficinadeturismo@cerdedilla.es. Address: Carretera de las Dehesas s/n. If you fancy yourself as a hiker, there is a 22.3-mile trail that leaves this point that reaches its summit in Puerto de Fuenfría, connecting Cercedilla with Segovia as part of the Way of St. James in the region of Madrid. One option is to leave at sunrise and you can reach Segovia in the afternoon without any problems provided you come with good equipment and hiking experience. Then, for dinner, you can enjoy some traditional suckling pig to regain all of your strength.
