The terrace season is now open!

Spring may harm your liver. That could be a warning from the health and alcohol-prevention authorities, since it’s hard not to bar hop in Madrid when the first rays of sun and heat hit the city. However, which bars to choose?

A good way of doing it, in order to narrow down the large amount of bars with outdoor terraces, is to go from square to square. You can start in Plaza Santa Ana, at Cervecería Alemana or Lateral, where they prepare pintxos and gourmet tapas that are ideal to combine with a good glass of wine or a beer.

Not far from there, Plaza de Matute is another charming spot in the city, in the heart of Barrio de Las Letras, which you can access from Calle Huertas.

In the Habsburg district, known as Madrid de los Austrias, we recommend Plaza de Ramales, near which they say that Diego de Velázquez is buried. Enjoy a cold beer on any of the bar terraces that you will find and then take a stroll down Calle de Santiago, which has a special atmosphere that combines traditional Spanish and Parisian. On the corner with Calle Milaneses you can find nice bars to have a drink and heading towards Mercado de San Miguel you will come across Mariscos Morris, one of the best places in Madrid to enjoy some oysters.

We now head to the other side of the city, in the area of Alonso Martínez, to Plaza Santa Bárbara, which despite being called a square, it’s more of a boulevard if we consider its long shape. Here, you can choose some good and cheap draught beer in the Cien Montaditos franchise or being served by a waiter in a white coat at Cervecería Santa Bárbara, always in this slick urbanite atmosphere.

And, lastly, two more squares in neighbouring Malasaña: Plaza Juan Pujol and Plaza San Ildefonso. Both of them are next to each other and near a third one, Plaza Dos de Mayo, all of them ideal to sit under the sun and enjoy the noble art of drinking beer and sampling tapas.
