Time for a summer picnic

A cheap and simple plan with a surprising romantic touch. Yes, we are talking about picnics, especially their night-time version, since you might melt under the sun if you do it during the day.

The Retiro, Madrid’s most famous public park, expands its opening hours in summer until midnight, a perfect excuse to fill your picnic bag with food, a blanket and a bottle of wine and enjoy the sunset in this green urban space. The tree branches acquire a special colour when night falls and since it’s a park with surveillance and safety officers, you will feel completely at ease until well after the sun goes down.

El Retiro cierra a las 24h

Parque del Oeste is the ideal place to go and admire a sunset at approximately 9.00 p.m. Since this French-style park, one of the most refined of its kind in the city, faces west, it is the ideal place to enjoy stunning sunsets. You can get here easily by Metro (Ventura Rodríguez – Line 3) and also visit one of the city’s most unique monuments inside, the Temple of Debod, a trip back in time to Ancient Egypt, spectacular inside and out.

Another excellent option for a picnic is Madrid Rio. You can get here in different ways by Metro but we recommend that you take Line 3 to Legazpi because, this way, you can visit the facilities at Matadero Madrid and access this leisure complex as it celebrates its fifth anniversary this summer. This is an ideal place for a picnic or a light dinner on one of its terraces. Another good idea is to get here by bicycle with BiciMad and, once you’ve had something to eat under the evening sky, feel the summer breeze in your hair as you ride on the 4.5-mile cycling path alongside the Manzanares river.
