The best auteur and awareness-raising movies in Madrid

It looks like this spring is going to be a treat for lovers of fine movies. We start with the programme offered at La Cineteca, in Matadero, from which we highlight the presentation of the documentary ‘Los Secretos, A Life At Your Side’, which will include the presence of some members of this emblematic Spanish band. It will take place on Thursday, April 12, at 8.30 p.m. in Sala Azcona. Tickets are available on the day one hour before the start of the session. Also take note of films such as The Streets, which is about Argentina’s historical memory; or the special series Resistentes, which as well as films will also offer an exhibition dedicated to the Catalan activist and painter Victoria Pujolar Amar, who died in 2017 at the age of 96.

Ingmar Bergman fans are in luck. From April to July, La Filmoteca in Madrid has organised a full retrospective of the Swedish director titled  ‘Centenary, Everything Bergman. Visions and Awakenings’. Bergman is the author of an extensive filmography which includes a dozen masterpieces, a feat achieved by few directors. On this occasion, we can go and see his works on the big screen with talks by experts before or after the movie that will enrich our experience. You can check out the April programme by clicking here, which includes Bergman’s early films and the complementary events, such as discussion forums at the end of the screening. The 15th is an interesting date, the screening of Secrets of Women, a film which sees the clash between idealist young love and mature commitments. It is screened again on the 24th.

Combining the spirit of La Filmoteca and of Madrid’s most modern side, Sala Equis is a recent addition to the scene using the concept of cinema bar. It screens auteur cinema with an elegant programme that includes talks, series and a wide range of events. Check out its website and discover everything it has to offer.
