Madrid Río is a recreational and cultural area that runs alongside part of the Manzanares River. In recent years, it has been totally redeveloped and has become really popular and fashionable among locals and visitors to the city. Here are three ideas for things to do in the area for a great day out.

A cultural morning at the Matadero

The old slaughterhouse (Matadero) in Madrid has now been turned into a small town dedicated to the world of culture. It provides a number of different spaces where you can enjoy a great choice of exhibitions and art. Among the attractions, don’t miss the International Centre for Live Arts featuring all kinds of performing and visual arts, the Cineteca, the only movie theatre in Spain dedicated almost exclusively to non-fiction, or the Central Plaza, where you will find a great choice of cultural activities.

Family games day

Madrid Rio has 17 play areas with swings made from sustainable, natural materials and ropes forming spider webs, hammocks, hanging bridges and climbing vines. And for the older kids, take a look at the slide park where you can find 8 huge slides (open, closed, single, double or winding). There is even a slide for visitors with reduced mobility. And if it gets hot, cool off on the beach which has water jets coming out of the ground.

Food and shopping in Plaza Rio 2

Plaza Río is a new type of shopping centre. It offers some of the best international cuisine overlooking the river. You can eat on the terrace of a variety of restaurants: get a hamburger at Five Guys, an open buffet with grilled meat at Brass and Firewood or the best sushi at Kobbeman.

You can also take the opportunity to shop in all the stores in the mall, including traditional stores such as H&M, Bershka, Mango, Zara or Massimo Dutti and lesser-known brands such as Oveja Negra, Hug & Clau or Menbur. There is also an Alcampo hypermarket for you to do the weekly grocery shop.

Madrid Río also offers a lot of great spaces for jogging or bike rides. In short, it’s a great place for a fun day out with the family, your partner or friends.
